The SII has continuous engagement with all the main competent authorities such as the PSA (Private Security Authority), NSAI (National Standards Authority of Ireland), Garda (National Police Service), QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland), INAB (Irish National Accreditation Board), SIPTU (National Security Unions and Social Partner), Employers and the end users.

SII conducts national and international research, gathers and analyses the data and disseminates the findings to the Irish, European and International security sectors. It drives the development of legislation, regulation, training and certification. The SII has a long standing excellent record in, and commitment to, programme development, delivery, assessment, certification and continuous up-skilling of personnel (at all levels) in the security sectors in Ireland and Internationally.

Through e-mails, literature, seminars and lectures the SII represents the Irish view in relation to security, programme development and security education at CoESS (Confederation of European Security Services) and at other International organisations. It defines and promotes the development and delivery of National, EU and International security policies, regulation, training and certification.

The SII is currently actively involved in development of standards for the Mass Event, Retail, Hardware products, Private Investigators, Electronics and Monitoring Centre sectors. It is also involved in the national review, with the Private Security Authority (Department of Justice) and National Standards Authority of Ireland of the IS 999:2004 National Manned Guarding Standard.

From the training and certification perspectives it is progressing training specification development nationally. These areas include Cash in Transit, Control and Restraint Techniques, Training Trainers, Security Personnel up-skilling, Professional Investigations Management, Asset Risk Management, New Terrorism and Counter Measures, E-Learning, Loss Prevention, Crime Prevention, Managing Employee Safety, Security Team Leadership, Event Security and Safety and internationally recognised certification of persons through ISO 17024.

Previously the SII were involved in many high level projects. These included development of the European Basic Guarding Training Manual and the Secure Best Value procurement document for Manned Guarding.

Finally the SII has developed an innovative program of RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) for personnel and managers in all areas of the security industry.
