SII President

Joe Leahy is a Peace Commissioner within the Irish judicial system. He has 40 years’ experience within the Garda and private security sectors and advises on risk and security matters at corporate and regulatory levels in Ireland and Europe.

He is the current President of the Security Institute. His qualifications include an Honours Degree in Training and Education and a Higher Diploma in Security Management. He is a Fellow of the Security Institute. He was a contributor to the Security Institute Skills Manual. Other experiences include ten years in delivery and assessment of training courses.

He is an active participant in all major training initiatives in Ireland and contributor to a number of European training projects. In his role as President of the SII he is instrumental in overseeing the future progression of the SII as a certification body and a ‘not for profit’ organisation.

John Byrne – BA Hons. F.Sec.I.I. H.Dip.Sec.Man.

SII CEO

John Byrne has thirty-five years’ experience in the private security industry and is currently Chief Executive Officer of the Security Institute, the largest industry certification body in Ireland. He is a recognised expert with twenty-five years’ experience in module development and course design. His qualifications include an Honours Degree in Training and Education and a Higher Diploma in Security Management.

He was made a Fellow of the Security Institute in recognition of contributions to training in Ireland and Europe. He is editor of the Security Skills Manual, the recognised source of reference for all security staff training in Ireland and author and contributor to training manuals at all levels in security.

Other experiences include twenty-five years in delivery and assessment of training courses from basic level to management level and ten years’ experience as an external examiner and authenticator with state accreditation bodies and awarding councils. He is an active participant in all major training initiatives in Ireland and contributor to a number of European training projects.

Larry Quinn – P.C. MSc. F.Sec.I.I. H.Dip.Sec.Man. Dip.Ed. C.P.P.

SII Director of Academic Research

Larry Quinn is a Peace Commissioner within the Irish judicial system. He has 40 years’ experience within the military, police and private security sectors and advises on academic matters at corporate and regulatory levels in Ireland, US and Europe.

He is a Fellow of the Security Institute. His qualifications include a Master of Science in Security and Risk Management, Higher Diploma in Security Management and a Diploma in Education and Training. As the Institute’s Director of Academic Research he is responsible for all aspects of research, programme development, delivery, assessment and validation. He also works with the state accreditation body as an external authenticator.

He was previously chairman of the working group that drafted the EU Vocational Training Manual for Basic Guarding and a team member that drafted the EU Manual for Procurement of Guarding Security Services. He is co-author of the Security Institute’s Training Manuals. Larry was a former social dialogue representative in the EU and CoESS Quality and Training Chairman. He was the Irish Director of the KOMSI Project.

Luke Maples – P.C. F.Sec.I.I. H.Dip.Sec.Man. Dip.Ed.

SII Director of Compliance

Luke Maples is a Peace Commissioner within the Irish judicial system. He has 30 years’ experience within the private security sectors including the CIT sector. He advises on security, risk and academic matters at corporate and regulatory levels in Ireland and Europe.

He is the Director of Compliance at the Security Institute. He is a Fellow of the Security Institute. His qualifications include a Higher Diploma in Security Management and a Diploma in Education and Training. As the Institute’s Director of Compliance he is responsible for all matters relating to ISO 9000/2008; IQNet; ISO 17024; QQI Quality Assurance Programme.

Bobby Duggan – F.Sec.I.I. H.Dip.Sec.Man.

SII Deputy President

Bobby Duggan has 30 years’ experience within the Irish Defence Forces and private security sectors. He advises on risk and security matters at corporate and regulatory levels in Ireland and Europe.

He is the current Deputy President of the Security Institute. His qualifications include a Higher Diploma in Security Management. He is a Fellow of the Security Institute. He was a contributor to the Security Institute Skills Manual. Other experiences include ten years in delivery and assessment of training courses.

He is an active participant in all major training initiatives in Ireland. In his role as Deputy President of the SII he is instrumental in assisting the President in overseeing the future progression of the SII as a certification body and a ‘not for profit’ organisation.

Bobby is one of the leading practitioners of the Dealing with Threats and Violence techniques programme and is the main trainer for ‘Train the Trainer’ in such methods.

Colin Ryecroft – M.Sec.I.I. H.Dip.Sec.Man. Dip.Ed.

SII Secretary

Colin Ryecroft has 30 years’ experience within the Irish Defence Forces and private security sectors. He currently advises on risk and security matters at retail corporate level in a major UK retail organisation with outlets in Ireland.

He is the Secretary and Legal Officer of the Security Institute. His qualifications include a Higher Diploma in Security Management and a Diploma in Education and Training. As the Institute’s Secretary he is responsible for all aspects of organisational compliance within the SII. He was a contributor to the Security Institute Skills Manual.

Other experiences include a number of years in the use of specialist security communications equipment and delivery and assessment of technology courses. In his role as Secretary of the SII he is instrumental in ensuring that the organisation is fully aware and compliant with the requirements of relevant legislation as a certification body and a ‘not for profit’ organisation.

John Fitzmaurice – BA Hons. M.Sec.I.I.

SII Director of Finance

John Fitzmaurice has 30 years’ experience within the Irish Defence Forces and private security sectors. He currently advises on safety matters at corporate level. He is the Director of Finance with the Security Institute.

His qualifications include a BA Hons in Safety Management; Higher Diploma in Security Management and a Diploma in Education and Training. As the Institute’s Finance Director he is responsible for all aspects of good financial governance within the SII. He was a contributor to the Security Institute Skills Training Manual.

Jess O’Sullivan – MSc, BA (Hons). M.Sec.I.I. H.Dip.Sec.Man. Dip.Ed.

SII Director

Jess O’Sullivan has 30 years’ experience within the private security sectors, specialising in DSP and Event sectors. She operates and advises within the DSP and Event environments. She is the Managing Director of AOS Security Management Solutions.

She has extensive experience within all aspects of Irish private security and training sectors. She was the academic representative at the national security regulator’s working group on security training. Jess has recently completed a Master’s Degree in Learning, Development & Consultancy in UCC, Cork. She also has a BA (Hons) in Crowd Safety Management, Security Resilience & Disaster Planning for Mass Events.

Jess is a director of the Security Institute of Ireland, Director of the Security Congress of Ireland, and a member of Consultative Committees for both the Private Security Authority and National Standards Authority of Ireland.

Jess advises the board on all matters concerning and relating to the DSP and Event sectors in Ireland.

Darren Maples – M.Sec.I.I.

SII Director

Darren Maples has 10 years’ experience within the private security sectors. He currently works within the Central Bank.  As one of the Institute’s Social Media Director’s, he is responsible for raising the SII social media footprint.

Frank Moles – M.Sec.I.I.

SII Director

Frank Moles has 30 years’ experience within the Irish Defence Forces and private security sectors. He currently advises on intelligence and security matters within the SII.

Paul Byrne – M.Sec.I.I. H.Dip.Sec.Man.

SII Director

Paul is a Director and Member of the Security Institute of Ireland. He has worked in the Irish Security Industry for over 20 years and is former member of the Irish Defence Forces. He has vast experience from working in senior roles within Ireland’s top security and facility management companies.

He is a Risk Assessor with the Security Institute of Ireland and a registered trainer in Crisis Prevention Intervention with the Crisis Prevention Institute. Paul brings professional security advice to managing the security of people and property. He combines his experience with first class logical, design and problem solving skills that lead to the development of high quality standards. Paul’s roles have given him a proven ability in staff and contract management, risk assessment, tender documentation, financial targets, business growth, and customer satisfaction

Garry Bergin – PC; M.Sec.I.I.;H.Dip.Sec.Man; DNLP; CF.APMP; M.IAI; Dip.PIMA

SII Director

Garry is a Peace Commissioner within the Irish judicial system. He is a Director and member of the Security Institute of Ireland and has over 20 years of experience in the security industry. He is a commercial manager and registered security consultant with Manguard Plus Limited. He has senior management level experience in security operations, risk and threat assessment, training, investigations, offender interviewing, human resources, process and procedure design, bid & contract management.

His qualifications include SII Higher Diploma in Security Management, BTEC Security Survey and Design, SII Diploma in Professional Investigation Management, SII Certificate in Managing Employee Safety, Advanced Master Practitioner in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Close Protection, Counter-Terrorism Instructor (accredited by NaCTSO – National Counter Terrorism Security Office), Train the Trainer (Level 6) and Critical Incident Management (certified by U.S. Department of Homeland Security). He is currently studying for a Master’s Degree in Security Management at the University of Portsmouth.

Garry currently lectures and trains security industry personnel in all areas of security. He is currently responsible for advancing the Security Institute’s Social Media footprint. He also advises the board on Counter Terrorism and Close Protection.

Simon Peers – JP MSyl M.Sec.I.I. FISPA CSyP

SII Director of Global and European Affairs

Simon is a Justice of the Peace within the English judicial system. He is a Director and Member of the Security Institute of Ireland. As Director of Global and European Affairs for the SII he is responsible for all areas within security sector representative organisations.

Simon is the Global Security Director having joined Sodexo in 2007. He has a unique ability to understand, design and implement, policies, procedures and processes that deliver cost effective and highly efficient security solutions to many clients. He has worked extensively on delivering industry leading regulatory compliance within Sodexo and built a network of key industry contacts. Simon was instrumental in building the current Sodexo security business and acted as project leader on a number of opportunities that will improve Sodexo’s ability to provide high level security services to clients.

Simon’s qualifications are an SII Diploma in Security Management, Level 4 Manned Guarding, NOCN Level 2 in Security Guarding, BIIAB Physical Intervention and City and Guilds 7303 (PTLLS) & 1886 (Conflict Management). He is an Approved Trainer with Skills for Security for Communication and Conflict Management.

Simon is a member of ASIS and a Charted Security Professional. He holds a Fellowship from the International Professional Security Association.

Paul Kellett – DSM; M.Sec.II

SII Director

Paul is a Director and Member of the Security Institute of Ireland.

He has 29 years experience within the State and Private security sectors. Paul is an honoured recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal for his service in the Irish Defense Forces.

Paul is currently employed in a security management role and he has been an industry trainer for over 10 years

George O’Dowd – M.Sec.I.I, CPO

SII Director

George is a Director and Member of the Security Institute of Ireland. He has worked in the Irish Security Industry for over 20 years and is a former member of the Irish Defence Forces. He has vast experience from working in senior roles within the Close Protection Sector, Events Sector and Manned Guarding Sector

He is a qualified risk assessor with the Security Institute of Ireland and a registered trainer in, Terrorism Awareness, Dealing with Conflict and Physical Threats, Manned Guarding and DSP. George brings professional security advice to managing the security of people and property. George is currently studying towards a Master’s Degree in Security Management through the University of Portsmouth.

George currently advises the board on issues relating to Close Protection, Events Management and Terrorism Awareness.

Gerry McNally – P.C. F.Sec.I.I. H.Dip.Sec.Man. Dip.Ed.

SII Director

Gerry McNally is a Peace Commissioner within the Irish judicial system. He has 40 years’ experience within the private security sectors and advises on risk and security matters at corporate and regulatory levels in Ireland and Europe. He is a Director and Fellow of the Security Institute. He was a former President of the Security Institute.

His qualifications include an SII Higher Diploma in Security Management and a Dip.Ed. from NUI Galway. He was a contributor to the Security Institute Skills Manual. Other experiences include fifteen years in delivery and assessment of training courses. He is an active participant in all major training initiatives in Ireland and has been a contributor to a number of European training projects. His expertise includes conflict management, risk assessment and delivery and assessment of training courses.

In his current role he is instrumental in overseeing the future progression of the SII building and renovation programmes.

Stephen Coleman – M.Sec.I.I.

SII Director

Stephen is a Director and Member of the Security Institute of Ireland. He has 26 years of experience in the security industry at all levels from DSP to Security Manager and has worked at some of the largest outdoor events in Ireland including Tall Ships Waterford 2011.

Stephen has vast proven experience in consulting for local Authorities, Private Enterprise and University Campus grounds in all areas of Security Awareness and dealing with Anti-Social Behaviour.

His qualifications include Diplomas in Event Management, Crime Prevention, Education & Training, Security Risk Management and Professional Investigations Management. He is currently completing a Level 7 course in Health & Safety.

Currently he advises local authorities on dealing with Anti-Social Behaviour and on protecting public assets. He also practically assists local authorities with the development of compliance policies and procedures for the implementation and enforcement of security plans on a project by project basis. Stephen is currently the Chairman of the Working Group within the Corporate Division of the SII

Peter Murray – M.Sec.I.I. C.P.C.

SII Director

Peter is a Director and Member of the Security Institute of Ireland. He has worked in the Irish Security Industry for over 20 years and is a serving member of the Irish Defence Forces Reserve. He has many years of experience working in the locksmith sector and is the owner and managing director of Stoptheburglar.ie which is a locksmith company, providing free and confidential home security assessments for use with insurance companies and underwriters.

Peter is a Risk Assessor with the Security Institute of Ireland. His company is a corporate member of the Security Institute of Ireland

His qualifications include an SII Diploma in Crime Prevention, SII Terrorism Awareness and locksmith qualifications through the National Locksmith Training School (UK). Peter is currently the Chairman of the Locksmiths Working Group within the Corporate Division of the SII.

Brian Hoy F.Sec.I.I. H.Dip.Sec.Man.

SII Director

Brian Hoy has 40 years’ experience within the public and private security sectors. He is a Director and Fellow of the Security Institute. He advises on risk and security matters at corporate and regulatory levels in Ireland and Europe. He headed the ISO 9001 programmes in America and Europe for six years.

He was the programme manager for the security industry covering both development of standards and certification for Manned Guarding, Electronic, Technical and CCTV Standards within the Irish Security Industry.

His qualifications include an SII Higher Diploma in Security Management. He was a contributor to the Security Institute Skills Manual. He is an active participant in all major training initiatives in Ireland and has been a contributor to a number of European training projects.

Tony Harrison – M.Sec.I.I. H.Dip.Sec.Man. Sec. Dip PIMA

SII Director

Tony Harrison has 30 years’ experience within the private security sectors. He is a Director of the Security Institute and advises on risk and security matters at corporate and regulatory levels in Ireland and Europe. His qualifications include a SII Higher Diploma in Security Management, Diploma in Professional Investigations Management and as a Certified Trainer for the RTV (Responding to threats and Violence).

He was a contributor to the Security Institute Skills Manual and other SII Manuals. He is an active participant in all major training initiatives in Ireland and has been a contributor to a number of European training projects.

Tony was Chairman of the Guarding Committee in the Security Institute. He chaired the SII committee in negotiations with the Private Security Authority on the new industry standard, PSA 28:2013.
