This vocational qualification was developed for those wishing to progress their career.

On successful completion learners will implement a “Managing Employee Safety” system, and carry out safety risk assessments with the emphasis placed on the tasks assigned to operational security staff on site. Reporting on findings and making recommendations.

Purpose

This vocational qualification was developed to satisfy the need to identify and address the range of both typical and unique safety risks associated with operational employees carrying out security tasks.

This vocational qualification is designed to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to undertake effective safety risk assessments and make recommendations for safety of employees operating within the security industry.

Duration

The recommended total duration of this programme is twelve weeks. Study guidelines are provided to assist learners with study scheduling and project completion.

When stated in terms of hours, learners, depending on their level of knowledge and experience, should consider a commitment of up to 150 hours for study, research and project completion. Learners with extensive experience, knowledge or background in security or any related field may not have to commit to the full duration.

Assessment

The course is assessed by way of a 3,000 word project; candidates have twelve weeks to complete this project.

Supports 

A comprehensive manual is provided. Candidates will also be provided with study and assessment guidelines and a project formatting template.

Certification 

Successful completion leads to an Advanced Certificate in Managing Employee Safety. This Certificate is issued by the security industry sector body for education and training, the Security Institute of Ireland.

Course Outcomes

On successful completion, participants will be able to understand:

  • The private security industry sectors and service categories, defining the role the safety risk assessor plays within the industry
  • The role security management plays in onsite safety, health and welfare
  • Core objectives and principal points of workplace safety and health legislation
  • The fundamental aspects of a safety management system
  • The various working environments and conditions in which the security officer operates
  • The range and nature of tasks performed onsite
  • Typical risks to employee safety, health and welfare associated with the tasks performed
  • The benefits in the use of templates to identify hazards and associated risks when conducting safety risk assessments across a range of environments
  • A range of generic control measures appropriate to the risks identified
  • How to select control measures appropriate to the risks identified including responses to third party threats and violence and physical intervention risks
  • A method of structuring a safety risk assessment report
  • A process for conducting safety related workplace incident investigations.
